Properties:
Magnesium carbonate is a white monoclinic crystalline or amorphous powder, odourless, tasteless, and stable in the air. Its composition is x MgCO3@ y Mg (OH) 2@ z H2O.
The ratio of x, y, z can be 4: 1: 4, 4: 1: 5, 4: 1: 6, 4: 1: 7, 3: 1: 3, 3: 1: 4. The relative density is 2.16. Magnesium carbonate is slightly soluble in water and solubility is 0.02%. Its aqueous solution is slightly alkaline. Magnesium carbonate is soluble in acid and ammonium salt solution. MgCO3 decomposes and releases carbon dioxide when reacting with dilute acid. MgCO3 decomposes and produces water, carbon dioxide and magnesium oxide.
Application:
Magnesium carbonate can be used as desiccant, colour agents, carriers, anti-caking agent, antacids in medicines, filler and reinforcing agents for rubber products, fireproofing insulation material with the characters like heat insulation.
