Wednesday, January 26, 2005 Associated Press British Economy Grows 3.1 Percent in 2004
The British economy grew by 3.1 percent in 2004, ending the year strongly despite continued declining output from production industries and the worst Christmas for retailers in more than 20 years.
Preliminary figures released by the Office for National Statistics on Wednesday showed that gross domestic product, or GDP, rose by a stronger-than-expected 0.7 percent in the three months to Dec. 31. That compared with growth of 0.5 percent in the previous three months.
The full year performance, which was in line with Treasury forecasts, followed growth of 2.2 percent in 2003.
