Date cultivation, a trump card for farmers
This may come as good news to farmers who are fearing a drought. A recent project report made by city-based Landmark Agrotech believes that date palms can turn out to be a boon for farmers working in dry, arid areas. According to the report, farmers, with successful cultivation of high-yielding Arabian varieties of date palms in dry land, can expect “at least Rs 5 lakh annual income per acre”.
Dispelling myths that date cultivation is possible only in desert areas, Dr PB Moorthy of Landmark Agrotech told reporters on Wednesday that though dates are drought resistant, it can also be grown on riverbeds and lakebeds.
“Date cultivation is economically viable, with over 100 trees planted in one acre of land. Profits are possible from the sixth year onwards to the next 50-100 years, which is the lifespan of date palms.
Intercrops too can be cultivated between date farms. Posted from India - Karnataka on 20 June, 2005 Last Modified on 5 January, 2006
